Swan & Maclaren

The places where we learn shape the people we become. We design schools, campuses, and learning environments that are open, generous, and ready for the way education is changing.

Education has moved well beyond rows of desks and chalk boards. Today's learners thrive in environments that support collaboration, creativity, and wellbeing as much as instruction. Educators are asking buildings to do more: blend formal and informal learning, support digital and physical tools, accommodate neurodiversity, and connect with the wider community.

We design education projects that feel welcoming on day one and remain useful for decades. That requires a careful read of the institution's pedagogy, culture, and ambitions, and a willingness to question convention where it no longer serves learning.

From early childhood centres to university faculties, from libraries to maker spaces, we bring strategy, design, and engineering together to create campuses that students are proud of and educators can grow into.

How We Can Help

1

Campus and learning strategy

We help educational institutions plan with confidence, whether the brief is a single new building, a campus expansion, or a long-term reimagining of an ageing estate. Our strategy work covers space utilisation studies, growth modelling, masterplanning, and pedagogical programming led by close conversation with educators and leadership. The result is a roadmap that aligns physical space with academic ambition and gives the institution a defensible plan to fund and phase.

2

Architecture, interior, and landscape design

Learning happens everywhere on a campus, not only in classrooms, and our designs treat the corridors, courtyards, libraries, and outdoor spaces as learning environments in their own right. We design for a wide range of learners, including different ages, learning styles, and accessibility needs, with daylight, acoustics, and biophilia all carefully considered. The buildings and grounds we design together encourage curiosity, collaboration, and quiet focus in equal measure.

3

Branding, wayfinding, and lighting

A coherent identity helps an institution communicate its character to students, parents, and staff, while clear wayfinding makes a complex campus feel welcoming and easy to navigate. We develop signage, environmental graphics, and lighting strategies that reinforce the institution's values and make daily life on campus feel intuitive. Done well, these layers also support recruitment, retention, and the sense of pride that holds an academic community together.

4

C&S and MEP engineering

Education buildings face heavy daily use, varied programme demands, and long expected lifespans, all on tight public or institutional budgets. Our C&S engineers design structures that allow for future flexibility, including knock-out walls and upgradable floor loadings, while our MEP engineers focus on the indoor environmental quality that we now know directly affects learning outcomes. We also lead the sustainability strategies that schools and universities increasingly need to demonstrate to their communities and funders.

5

Project management

Education projects must respect academic calendars, live operations, and tight summer construction windows, and our project managers plan carefully around all of them. We coordinate consultants and contractors so that staged completions land between terms, and we manage budget and programme with the transparency that boards and trustees expect. The outcome is a project that opens on time, within budget, and with minimal disruption to teaching and learning.
