Swan & Maclaren & Franzwood MoU: A Partnership to Carry Heritage Forward

Swan & Maclaren has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Franzwood, joining a century of architectural and design heritage with deep expertise in conservation and restoration engineering.

For more than a century, Swan & Maclaren has shaped Singapore’s architecture, from colonial-era landmarks to the modernist buildings that gave the city much of its mid-century character. Many of those buildings still stand, and over time some have quietly become part of the country’s heritage.

Franzwood brings specialist depth in conservation and restoration engineering. Its work spans the Fullerton Waterboat House, the Old Hill Street Police Station, and a long list of churches, civic buildings and places of worship that have been carefully returned to active use.

For a long time, the instinct was to clear and rebuild. That thinking is changing. Retaining and adapting an existing building keeps embodied carbon in place, holds onto the texture and memory of a neighbourhood, and often yields something with more character than a new structure could offer. It is also harder. Heritage fabric does not behave like new construction, and weaving modern services, structural reinforcement and contemporary use into an old building takes patience, judgement, and engineering that understands how these structures were first made.

That is the thinking behind the partnership. Swan & Maclaren’s architectural and design heritage, paired with Franzwood’s conservation and restoration engineering, gives building owners a credible route to adaptive reuse. One that respects the original and works for the way people live and work today.

Heritage deserves to be handled with skill, care, and respect.

Singapore’s next chapter of growth will not only be written in new towers. A good deal of it will happen inside buildings that are already standing. Swan & Maclaren and Franzwood intend to help write it with care for the original and confidence in what comes next.
