At 530 metres, Tianjin CTF Finance Centre is the tallest building in Tianjin and one of the tallest in China. When the tower's owners commissioned the illumination design, the challenge was as much about restraint as it was about presence. A building this large doesn't need to work hard to be seen — it needs to work smart.
The tower's faceted form, designed by SOM, offered clear opportunities for the lighting to reinforce the architecture. The illumination concept followed the building's vertical striations, using linear lighting to trace the facade's geometry from base to crown.
At this scale, energy consumption and maintenance access become critical design factors. Every luminaire placement had to consider long-term serviceability. The colour strategy was designed to give the tower a consistent identity — cool and restrained — while allowing for programmable moments tied to civic events.
The Tianjin CTF Finance Centre now stands as the defining vertical element of the Tianjin skyline after dark. The lighting doesn't compete with the architecture — it reveals it, night after night.
