Designing a flagship hospital for one of Asia's most demanding healthcare markets

Raffles Hospital Shanghai is a 400-bed international hospital located in the New Hongqiao district — a strategic position serving one of China's most important commercial and transportation hubs. When Raffles Medical Group commissioned the architectural design, the brief called for a facility that could deliver Singaporean healthcare standards to the Chinese market.

Hospital design at this scale requires managing complexity. The building accommodates inpatient wards, specialist clinics, diagnostic facilities, operating theatres, and support services — each with distinct planning, environmental, and infection control requirements.

The design organises departments across a clear clinical spine, with public and private circulation separated to ensure efficiency and patient dignity. Facade design balances daylighting with solar control, while material choices prioritise durability and ease of maintenance.

Raffles Hospital Shanghai is now operational and has established itself as a leading international healthcare provider in the Yangtze River Delta. The building supports Raffles Medical's continued expansion in China — anchored by architecture designed for the long term.
